Effective storytelling is hard to grasp, in both fiction and nonfiction writing. In my opinion, in order to be an effective storyteller in nonfiction, you have to be able to capture the audience’s attention, give details, but make sure that you get to the point in a quick manner. One example of this is an article about My Chemical Romance’s Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge album, where they explain the storyline behind it, and other fun facts. In this article, they open with a question: “What would you do to see your partner again? Is death enough to separate two lovers?” By starting with an interesting hook, it not only immediately grabs the audience’s attention, but it sets up the basis of the plot of the album.
Throughout the article, they tell the story of the lead singer, the album, and the genre of the band. They do this all in five paragraphs, enough to let the audience have a good grasp on the subject, but not so much that they would get bored reading.
